iPhone Programming

5 August 2008

I am now official registered as member of the iPhone Developer Program. I've programmed for the Windows Mobile platform in the past so I'm interested to seen how the iPhone compares. I'm particularly keen to experiment with the touch user interface in applications.

TED: Technology, Entertainment and Design

I have been enjoying listening to TED presentations. TED, which standards for Technology, Entertainment and Design, was started by Chris Anderson, an editor at Wired. The TED website includes speeches from world leading designers, computer experts, writers and scientists about a whole range of topics including creativity, the environment, communities and communication. Most of the speechers are insightful and entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the secret box speech by J.J. Abrams (creator of the Lost television series).

Technology Park to Grow

I was excited to read that the West Australian State Government in committed to growing Bentley Technology Park seven fold to create a 314ha technology precinct. While calling it 'Western Australia's Silicon Valley' is a bit exaggerated, it is designed to become Australia's biggest technology precinct and include high speed internet access, a lot more office space, labs and restaurants. Technology Park is located just down the road from me and I hope this development will create improved opportunities for the computer industry in Perth.

Things from Cultured Code

I have been using Things from Cultured Code for the last couple of weeks. This application, currently in beta, allows you to record tasks and easily filter and sort them by tags, projects, areas and scheduled time. I have tried quite a few task management and Getting Things Done (GTD) type software programs, but the simplicity and elegance of Things makes it a winner. This program is for the Mac OS X, so if you are a Windows only user, then you are out of luck.

Flex 3 and Adobe AIR Released

Adobe has released Flex 3.0 and Adobe Air. Flex is a fantastic platform for building rich internet applications using the Flash runtime environment. Adobe Air takes this one step further by allowing applications to be developed once and then deployed to Windows, Mac and Linux desktop operating sytems. While Flash CS3 is aimed at designers, Flex and Air were created with software developers in mind. I am already building my first production Adobe Air application for a client using Flex Builder and I am very impressed with the framework, user interface components and ActionScript 3.0 language. There are some good examples of Flex and Air programs.
